Ashley Quavavau

Ashley Qavavau, born on March 4, 2003, in Iqaluit, Nunavut, is an emerging Inuit artist known for her unique and contemporary interpretations of traditional Inuit themes. Her parents are Peter Ottokie and Candice Qavavau, and she has one brother. Her artistic lineage is impressive; her great-grandparents, Sheojuk Etidloie and Pudlo Pudlat, were distinguished graphic artists whose works significantly influenced Inuit art.

Ashley began her artistic journey in April 2023, drawing inspiration from her father, Peter Ottokie. She focuses on depicting everyday Inuit items, such as the amuati (a traditional parka), ulu (a woman’s knife), and other daily objects. Her style reflects a modern take on these traditional items, merging cultural heritage with contemporary art forms.

Ashley is a member of the Cape Dorset community, a renowned hub for Inuit art. Cape Dorset, known as Kinngait in Inuktitut, has a rich history of producing prominent Inuit artists, and Ashley continues this tradition with her fresh and innovative approach.

Her works, including notable pieces like "Tunnili Ulu (Tattooed Ulu)," have been featured in various exhibitions. This piece, part of the 2023 Dorset Print Collection, exemplifies her ability to blend traditional motifs with modern aesthetics, making her a promising figure in the contemporary Inuit art scene.
