Ben Henry
Ben Henry is a renowned Indigenous artist born in 1950, a member of the Deer Clan of the Onondaga Tribe from the Six Nations of the Grand River reservation in Ontario, Canada. His artistic journey began with wood carving at the age of 17, but he transitioned to soapstone, also known as steatite, in 1982. Ben Henry is largely self-taught and has been showcasing his works in various exhibitions since 1984.
Ben's sculptures are celebrated for their intricate details and deep connection to his cultural heritage. He often explores themes rooted in Indigenous traditions, creating pieces that resonate with the spiritual beliefs and stories of his ancestors. His work with soapstone, a medium traditionally used by various Indigenous cultures, allows him to craft sculptures that are both visually stunning and rich in cultural symbolism. Each piece he creates reflects a harmonious balance between form, texture, and narrative, making his art both meaningful and captivating.
Ben Henry remains committed to traditional values, choosing not to be a registered member of the band and refraining from accepting government funding. His works continue to be featured in galleries and exhibitions, contributing to the preservation and celebration of Indigenous art and culture.
