Palaya Qiatsuq
Palaya Qiatsuq, born on May 10, 1965, in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, Canada, is a distinguished Inuit sculptor celebrated for his mastery in carving and his dedication to preserving Inuit culture. He hails from a lineage of renowned artists; his grandfather, Kiakshuk, was a respected figure in Cape Dorset’s first generation of artists, and his father, Lukta Qiatsuq, was a notable sculptor and printmaker.
Palaya began carving at the young age of 12, learning the craft from his father. His work predominantly features themes of transformation, shamanism, and everyday Inuit life, often carved in materials like serpentine stone, marble, and fossilized whale bone. His sculptures are known for their intricate details and deep cultural significance, aiming to educate others about Inuit traditions and the challenges faced by his ancestors.
Over the years, Palaya has gained international recognition, exhibiting his work in Canada, the United States, and Europe. In addition to his artistic endeavors, he has served his community in various roles, including as a Community Constable and as the mayor of Cape Dorset. Through his art, Palaya continues to inspire and educate, ensuring that the rich heritage of Inuit culture is passed down to future generations.
