Malaija Pootoogook

Malaija Pootoogook was born in Iqaluit during the chilly January of 1971. She was adopted by Paulassie Pootoogook and Ishuhungitok Pootoogook, both of whom have passed away. Malaija grew up in a family rich with artistic talent. Her father, Paulassie, was a well-known sculptor, and her brother, Mosesee, is also a skilled stone carver. Another brother, Itee Pootoogook, has gained both critical and popular recognition for his contemporary drawings. Malaija created her first drawing in 1994, drawing inspiration from her great-grandmother, the late Pitseolak Ashoona. Her work was featured in the annual print collection for the first time in 2011, with two evocative depictions of the Arctic Owl. Her art continues to feature expressive and grand representations of birds and Arctic wildlife.
