Johnny Pootoogook

Johnny Pootoogook, born in 1971 in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, is a prominent Inuit artist renowned for his distinctive printmaking and drawing. Johnny
is the son of Cape Dorset artists Kananginak and Shouyu Pootoogook. His work reflects the rich cultural heritage and traditional lifestyle of the Inuit people, as well as the modern influences that shaped contemporary Indigenous art.

Pootoogook’s art often features themes from traditional Inuit life, including hunting scenes, family life, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. His drawings are characterized by their detailed line work and vibrant use of color, capturing the essence of Inuit culture with both reverence and innovation.

Throughout his career, Johnny Pootoogook participated in numerous exhibitions and his works were included in significant collections, such as those at the National Gallery of Canada and the Inuit Art Foundation.
