Pitseolak Qimirpik

Pitseolak Qimirpik is an Inuit carver from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, born in 1986. He is known for his contemporary approach to traditional Inuit carving, blending traditional forms with modern themes. Qimirpik began carving at a young age, influenced by his father, Kellypalik Qimirpik, a renowned carver. His family, including his uncle Allashua Atsiaq and cousin Noo Atsiaq, are also noted artists, which further shaped his artistic journey.

Qimirpik's work is characterized by a unique blend of humor and modern life, often depicting northern fauna like walruses and owls with playful twists, such as walruses dancing or rabbits engaging with pop culture. He uses traditional materials, like serpentine stone, while integrating elements of contemporary life, as seen in his well-known piece, Young Man with MP3 Player (2010), which juxtaposes modern technology with traditional carving.

Qimirpik’s art has been exhibited widely, including in galleries across Canada, the United States, and even Switzerland. He continues to live and work in Kinngait, where he honors his father's legacy while making his own mark on the world of Inuit art.
