Oshutsiaq, Matheussie
Matheussie Oshutsiaq, also known as Matt Oshutsiaq, is an emerging Indigenous artist from Cape Dorset (now Kinngait), Nunavut, Canada, a region well-known for its rich artistic traditions. Born into a family of artists, Matheussie was raised by his grandmother, Omalluk Oshutsiaq, a recognized carver whose stylistic influence is evident in Matheussie's work.
Specializing in the creation of Inukshuks—stone landmarks used by the Inuit—Matheussie primarily works with serpentine stone, a material sourced from Baffin Island. His sculptures are noted for their fluid and well-rounded forms, a modern take on traditional Inuit artistry, honoring the techniques and styles passed down from his grandmother. As his career progresses, Matheussie's work continues to develop in detail and refinement.
You can learn more about his work at various galleries like Galerie Images Boréales, Madrona Gallery, and North End Gallery.
