Ell, Jalen

Jalen Ell is a celebrated Indigenous artist known for her vibrant and evocative artwork that blends traditional techniques with contemporary perspectives. Born and raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, Ell's work is deeply influenced by her Lakota heritage and the natural landscapes of her homeland.

Ell's artistic journey began in childhood, as she was introduced to the rich traditions of beadwork, painting, and storytelling by her grandmother. She went on to study Fine Arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she honed her skills and developed a unique style that merges traditional Lakota symbols with modern art forms.

Her portfolio includes a diverse range of media, from intricate beadwork and textiles to striking mixed-media installations. Ell’s work often explores themes of identity, resilience, and cultural preservation, drawing on her personal experiences and the broader Indigenous experience.

Ell has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, with notable shows at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the Denver Art Museum, and the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City. In addition to her artistic practice, she is an advocate for Indigenous rights and a mentor for young Native artists, fostering a new generation of creative voices.
