Oshutsiak, Mathewsie

Mathewsie Oshutsiak is a contemporary Inuit sculptor from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, born on June 18, 1993. Raised in a region renowned for its artistic heritage, Mathewsie is deeply influenced by his cultural roots. He was adopted by his grandmother, Omalluk Oshutsiaq, herself a notable carver, who significantly influenced his artistic development.

Mathewsie's primary medium is sculpture, and he is particularly known for creating Inukshuks, traditional Inuit stone landmarks. He works with serpentine stone sourced from Baffin Island, bringing a blend of traditional and modern elements to his work. His sculptures are characterized by smooth, rounded forms, a stylistic hallmark passed down from his grandmother.

As a young artist, Mathewsie continues to refine his craft, creating pieces that are both a tribute to his heritage and a reflection of his evolving personal style. His work is celebrated for its attention to detail and the seamless integration of traditional Inuit themes with contemporary aesthetics.
