Andrew Qappik
Andrew Qappik, born on February 25, 1964, in Nunataq, Nunavut, is a renowned Canadian Inuk graphic artist and printmaker. He currently resides in Pangnirtung, Nunavut. Qappik is celebrated for his contributions to the visual culture of Nunavut, including designing the Nunavut flag and coat of arms, as well as logos for the Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated. In recognition of his work, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2017.
Qappik's artistic journey began at a young age, influenced by his uncles Solomon and Imoona Karpik, who were also artists. He started drawing at eight years old, initially inspired by comic books. By the age of 14, he had five prints published in the Pangnirtung Print Collection. Over the years, he mastered various printmaking techniques, including stonecut, stencil, etching, and lithography.
His artwork often blends traditional Inuit themes with contemporary Arctic life, frequently depicting animals, hunting scenes, and landscapes. Qappik's unique style is characterized by a naturalistic approach, subtle color variations, and detailed perspectives. He has held numerous exhibitions internationally, including a significant solo retrospective at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 2010, which showcased 32 of his prints.
Qappik is also known for his community involvement, having created a shelter for women fleeing abusive situations with his wife, Annie. He has illustrated school textbooks, designed coins for the Royal Canadian Mint, and created tapestries and wooden signs for various organizations.
