Pudlalik Shaa

Pudlalik Shaa, born on December 29, 1965, in Cape Dorset (Kinngait), Nunavut, is a renowned Inuit sculptor known for his intricate carvings. He is part of a prominent family of artists; his father, Aqjangajuk Shaa, was a well-known sculptor, and his brothers, Qiatsuq and the late Qavavau, were also carvers. Pudlalik began carving at the age of 12, learning by observing his father and other local carvers who primarily used hand tools like axes. His first piece was a small seal, and since then, he has developed a distinctive style, often depicting themes like walruses, drum dancers, and transformations in his work.

Pudlalik's art has been featured in various exhibitions across North America and Europe, including the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum. His work is characterized by a mix of traditional and modern techniques, and he has supported himself through his art since he was 17 years old.
