Tim Pitsiulak

Tim Pitsiulak was an Inuit artist born in 1967 in Kimmirut, Nunavut, and was inspired by his aunt, Kenojuak Ashevak, a prominent figure in Inuit art. Although he initially trained in sculpture and jewelry making, Pitsiulak found his true calling in drawing and printmaking. He gained recognition in 2005 with his first print, Caribou Migration, marking the start of a successful career that blended traditional Inuit motifs with modern techniques. His artwork, characterized by detailed depictions of Arctic wildlife and Inuit life, was deeply influenced by his experiences as a hunter and his connection to the land.

Pitsiulak's works are celebrated for their rich narrative quality and technical precision, often drawing on his own photographs as references. His depictions of the natural world, particularly the bowhead whale, and scenes from Inuit life, resonate with a deep respect for his culture and environment. His pieces have been widely exhibited and collected by major institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of History. In addition to his visual art, Pitsiulak contributed to contemporary Inuit culture through commissioned works like the 25-cent coin design for the Royal Canadian Mint in 2013.

Tragically, Tim Pitsiulak passed away in 2016 at the age of 49, leaving behind a significant legacy in the world of Inuit art. His work continues to be celebrated for its profound connection to Inuit traditions and the Arctic landscape, ensuring that his influence endures in both his community and the broader Canadian art scene.
